puppy bit by older dog monday. having strange symptoms.?
My 8 week old beagle pup was bit in the eye on monday. we took her to the vet and he gave her 2 antibiotics, one is oral and the other is drops for her eye. she has been doing great, until tonight. she ate a lot and threw her food up, and is now refusing food or water. also her pee is thick and pus-like, as if she has a urinary tract infection or a yeast infection. she has an appointment first thing in the morning. should i wait to take her to the vet or call the emergency number? she is sleeping right now and has stopped throwing up for the moment.
i’ve given her water with an eye dropper and she has taken it well. good job with what nik4u?
Vomiting can be due to the antibiotics, or due to overeating – make sure you feed her every time you give oral antibiotics, but don’t ever-feed her.
If she’s resting comfortably at the moment, you can -probably- wait, but if in doubt, call the emergency vet. If she wakes up and is vomiting or seems to be in pain, take her to the emergency vet.
Since she’s so young and not eating, it’s easy for her to become hypoglycemic (low blood sugar). If she’s very lethargic, she may be hypoglycemic, and this is an emergency. Rub a but of corn syrup or sugar water on her gums, and take her to the vet immediately.
She may easily become dehydrated if she’s vomiting and not drinking. To check hydration, pull up some extra skin and release it; it should snap back quickly. If a ridge remains, she’s likely dehydrated. Feel her gums – they should be moist and not sticky; if they are sticky she’s dehydrated. Dehydration, especially in a puppy, requires IV or subcutaneous fluids. While you’re looking at her gums, they should be pink, not pale or white or bluish or muddy; if they are anything but pink consider taking her to the emergency vet.
