If this is your first infection, you really should see your doctor to rule out other possible infections – including some STDs that, if left untreated, can be VERY harmful.

If you’ve been through this before and are just sick of spending $15-$20 on some goopy OTC mess, here’s what I’ve found to work:

1) Acidophilus pills. They’re in the vitamin aisle. You can take 3 orally, or you can use one gel-cap as a suppository. I’ve done this before, and while it takes a bit longer than the monistat-type treatment, it does work, it’s cheaper, and it’s not an anti-fungal – meaning it doesn’t disrupt the "good" flora in your system.

2) STAY. AWAY. FROM. SUGAR. Yeast thrives on sugar, so if you eat a sugary diet (candy, sugary yogurts, lots of fruits, soda, fruit juice, etc), cut it out – if not permanently, at least temporarily. Yogurt is great for yeast infection prevention; it contains acidophilus. But this effect is cancelled out if it also contains a lot of sugar.

3) Also try to limit the amount of bread-like food products you eat.

4) If you’re on the birth control pill, talk to your GYN; many women get frequent yeast infections due to the estrogen in the pill (estrogen alters your body’s PH level, yeast thrives when PH levels are imbalanced)

And obviously stay away from sex, using tampons, etc. Tampons especially are a BAD idea when you have a yeast infection; it’s just a nice little breeding ground for yeast, bacteria, etc.
