Is there another way of treating a cat’s bacterial/ yeast infection besides drops?

My boyfriend’s cat was diagnosed with a bacterial yeast infection in his ears. We had thought the cat had mites and my bf couldnt keep up with the drops once a day (he’s very busy) so he took him to the vet to get rid of them in a one shot deal. However when he got to the vet’s it turned out it was a bacterial/ yeast infection which the vet said was worse. So my boyfriend went from not being able to apply mite drops once a day to being given medication & wash that he needed to do TWICE a day. Needless to say this was weeks ago and he probably only put the medicine in the cat’s ears about 4 or 5 times. I’ve tried doing it myself when I’m there but I’m not there enough to get the job done. I’m really worried about the cat as he’s shaking his head more. Is there another treatment for this & what can this problem lead to? I’m worried, but hoping there’s a shot for this?

OK, the cat NEEDS the treatment. If your boyfriend can’t do it, he can take the cat to the vet, pay to hospitalize it and they can clean and medicate the cat’s ears twice a day. It will be a hell of a lot more expensive… OR he can just suck it up and do it. Wrap the kitty in a thick fluffy towel so all of his feet are wrapped close to the body. This way he can’t scratch. Put the cleanser in the ear and massage the ear, let kitty shake head to throw some of the stuff out, wipe out with cotton ball, apply medication.

Without treatment, the infection could ge worse resulting in scarring of the ear canal, ear drum, move to an inner ear infection which is much harder to get rid of, lead to hearing loss, etc. If he can’t do it, he needs to let his vet do it.

Also, even if it’s a bacterial infection, antibiotics really aren’t the best way to go. Systemic antibiotics don’t really penetrate the ear that well, so ointments directly into the ear are the absolute best course of action, plus you aren’t killing off all the beneficial bacteria in your cat’s body leading to other problems.

Is yogurt really good for chronic yeast infection in ears?

I read this somewhere but now I can’t find anything about it and I don’t know how much or how often to feed it or if it really IS a good thing to be feeding my cat. She’s had ongoing yeast infections since I adopted her and I wanted to see if there was anything cheaper than the vet since I’ll be dealing with this the rest of her life.
Ohhhhhh thanks Elaine!! That’ll help anyway!! I’ve been buying drops at the vet every couple months so that will at least save me money!!

No, not in the ears. The yogurt/yeast infection only works with humans (women, and it’s what you put in AFTER you douche down there to get the good bacteria going again).

For cats with yeast infections in the ears you need to change the acidity of the environment to stop the yeast growth. It’s easiest done with a kleenex wadded over your finger, dipped in 50/50 water/vinegar and swabed out every other day. The yogurt won’t do a thing.

Will a womens yeast infection cream help a yeast infection in a dogs ears?

Not all yeast infections are the same. Besides being different strains there can be 2nd, 3rd additional bacterial infections also which yeast treatments will not help. Take to vet for accurate diagnosis then work on what is causing the yeast to occur – food, humidity, not cleaning etc.

Yeast Infections / Candida In Canines

Yeasts are single cell living creatures, which can be found on the surface of all living things, including a dog’s body. It is usual that yeasts live on the mucous membranes in the digestive tract. There is one particular group of yeasts, which are known as Candida albicans and they live in the digestive tract and in order to survive, they consume such things such as fats and sugars.

When a dog has a healthy immune system, the body can destroy the yeasts. But when a dog has a weak immune system, then the yeast, which feeds opportunistically may reproduce in large amounts which cause toxins that strongly affect the immune system, preventing it from working correctly.

It is at this point that a lot of health problems can occur as the system becomes altered. So it is important to remember that too much growth of yeast toxins can affect your dog’s immune system, nervous system and endocrine system. As these particular systems are all connected, then yeast toxins can cause major allergies, infections in the bladder, skin disorders and several other different health problems.

The cause of yeast infections, like Candida, comes from grain-based foods and drugs, chemicals and poisons. Cooked food, such as canned or bagged food will destroy the natural immune system. Also antibiotics can cause yeast infections because they kill the good bacteria that would normally be used to fight the yeast. Steroids that shut down the body’s ability to fight back, and other drugs, such as Frontline, Advantage, Heartguard, etc. are all reasons for the occurrence of yeast infections.

There are various types of treatments being used to treat yeast infections. Although drugs are a temporary fix for yeast problems, they do not in actual fact eliminate the cause of the symptom. It is important to find the cause so that it can be started.

As with any type of infection, prevention is the cure. It is important to put your dog on a raw meat and bone diet immediately, along with supplements to boost and balance the immune system. This will also cleanse the toxins from the body and re-establish a friendly bacteria, which will effectively help to fight the yeast and increase the level of nutrition in your dog. This must be a permanent lifestyle change in order to prevent your dog getting any more yeast infections.

*** Some great foods for your dog to eat:

Vegetables -asparagus, broccoli, eggplant, cauliflower, green beans, cucumber, brussel sprouts & celery

Meats -chicken, beef, rabbit, duck, lamb & fish

Dairy -plain yogurt, pasteurized non-fat milk, pectin, naturally milled sugar & natural vanilla flavor

*** These foods should be forbidden at all times:

buttermilk, cheese, peanuts, crackers, pretzels, bread, sausages, ham, sauces, mushrooms, potatoes, bacon, grains such as: white and brown rice, wheat, oats and barley and anything sweet such as, sugar, honey, maple syrup, etc.

You’ll get that “sad eye look” while you are eating, I am sure, they like to make you feel guilty. Know that, by NOT giving your dog some of these foods listed above, you are showing your pup just how much you love them!

Home remedy’s for ear yeast infection?

i have a chocolate lab who has been treated several times for a ear infection. the vet seemed to think it was a mite infection, and when treated with medicine, the systems did not go away. After doing some one line research, i have come to the conclusion that it is in fact a yeast infection. However i can not currently budget taking my dog to the vet and wondered if there were any home remodys to help limit the problem for the next week or so until i can get him to the vet. side note: he also scratches his ear alot and seems to have cut his inner ear in the process, how bad will this counteract with the yeast infection?

I have found the best way to treat a yeast and/or bacteria is a solution my vet told me to use. It is 50% white vinegar and 50% rubbing alcohol. I put it in a small squeeze bottle and squeeze it into the ear then use baby wipes to wipe out the ear. The cut will be irritated by the solution and you can use a neosporin type cream on that. Try to do it b4 he goes on a walk to limit the scratching.

What can I do for my cat? He has a yeast infection in his ear!?

I took him to the vet because he kept digging in his ears and the vet had 3 people hold him down to just look at his ears. We’ve never really cleaned them (we did when he was a kitten but as he grew he hated it and since I’m the only one he likes he tolerated me doing it for short periods of time, but now he hates it and won’t let you near his ears) and the doctor said he would give me medicine but since he doesn’t like people near/in his ears he didn’t give it to me. Mostly because he didn’t want me to get hurt. What should I do for him?
Well, like I said the vet had to have 3 people (himself included) to hold down my cat just to check his ears out. Bear *that’s his name* is old 14, but believe me I won’t be going back to that vet!

The vet should have never let him leave with an infection and no medications! That’s negligence and unacceptable to me. I have 4 cats. One is the size of a poodle, a big baby who lets me do anything to him. The little one that is 5 pounds, persian fluffy innocent looking little girl is vicious when you try to do anything to her and so hard to hold!

You gotta get medicine and get it in him, whether by pill or ear drops. If it’s definitely a yeast infection, you could buy One brand cat food and feed it to him to help prevent the yeast from growing, it has yogurt in it.

I would suggest a soft carrier with a zipper open top, you can put him in it, unzip the top so just his head is out and then have someone hold his head while you do his ears. Even if you don’t clean them out, get the medication in the ears.

With his age, sedation isn’t good, 12 and older can be risky. It can be expensive to have him stay over at the vets for the duration of medications too.

I’d try the carrier, get the One food, and also try a cloth or towel over his body too. How is he with pills? Probably just as bad, they have a pill popper thing that looks like a shot giver, I have that for if silky needs a pill at some point.

Can someone tell me the home remedy for curing yeast infection in a dogs ears?

Don’t think that yeast is common in a dogs ears. Yeast usually happens in warm moist areas. Anyway yeast prefer alkaline environments. Dilute vinegar, 1/2 cup to a quart of water, can be put on a washcloth and the ears wiped out several times per day. If no help, see the vet. Would not use the creams for human skin in a dogs ear.
